Sangam is the chamber music duo of sitarist Paul Livingstone and cellist Peter Jacobson. Paul and Pete will be joined by Aminah Chishti, a dynamic tabla virtuosa who has toured the world bringing her Sufi heart to the infectious dynamics of Qawwali tabla and singing.
Paul & Pete have just released their 2nd record on the audiophile label, Yarlung Records, a full album of spontaneous improvisations recorded 'Taos Mountain Meditations' a follow up to their 2022 release 'Sangam' of contemporary arrangements of classical ragas.
Aminah Chishti has become a leading force in the art of the traditional Qawwali genre of tabla. Her studies took her under the wing of the lineage holder Ustad Dildar Hussain (28 years playing for the legend of Pakistan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) and has toured the world performing Qawwali Sufi music with Fanna-Fi-Allah, an ensemble she founded.
As the first western and first woman disciple of this genre, Aminah has become a revolutionist by changing the boundaries of women, by being accepted by the community of a 1000-year-old lineage. She has sat where no woman has ever sat or maybe will ever sit. As a Qawwal, Aminah has offered music in various shrines around the world. “I must have permission first, they still sometimes say no, but when I do get to play, that no, gives more meaning to a yes.”
Sangam is the chamber music duo of sitarist Paul Livingstone and cellist Peter Jacobson. Sangam performs innovative compositions and improvisations straddling the worlds of Indian classical music and European polyphony which arc between deep musical meditations to dynamic poly-rhythmic counterpoint. Their unique sound is imbibed with the free spirit of a jazz improvisation and incorporates touches of Latin, folk and popular music styles.
Sangam means 'a confluence of rivers', it is a meeting place of disparate streams flowing into one. Paul & Pete have been recording and touring together for over 18 years performing with Arohi Ensemble, Build an Ark and Quartetto Fantastico among many other projects born of the globalized Los Angeles creative music community. Paul & Pete have been featured on four Grammy Award-winning records artists such as with Ozomatli, Juan Gabriel, Quetzal & Ricky Kej and have played in a plethora of traditions, genres and styles from South Asian and Western Classical, to African, Latin, Pop, Hiphop & Country.
Sangam has just released their 2nd record on the audiophile label, Yarlung Records a full album of spontaneous improvisations made at the inspiring Imhof Studio in Taos, New Mexico.
